The information technologies that are commonly used in logistics industry include electronic data interchange (EDI), the Internet, value added network (VAN), point of sales (POS), electronic ordering system (EOS), logistics information system, computer telephony integration, and enterprise information portals.
The application of IT is useful in the logistics industry, a sector that is growing in importance, particularly in service based industry. IT plays the linking role among various parties such as manufacturers, retailers, transportation carriers, and final customers in the logistics networks. Unlike other sectors, Indian logistics industry spends less than one percent on information technology (IT). According to the study done by Kale Consultants, Indian logistics industry accounts for merely two percent of the $5,000 billion global logistics industry.
“The logistics industry currently spends a meagre 0.5 to 0.17 percent of its overall revenue on IT. The major industry segments that use IT in their logistics spends include airports, ports, warehouses, inland container depots (ICDs) and freight forwarders,” says the study.
The Indian market is estimated at $90 billion and projected to burgeon to $385 billion by 2015. While the global market is growing at the rate of 10 percent, the 3PL (third-party logistics) market, which accounts for six percent of the total market, is expected to grow at 16 percent and command 13 percent of the total logistics market by 2012. Currently, the total size of the domestic logistics industry is about Rs.2.44 lakh crore, with the transportation sector, including road, rail and sea freight, contributing Rs.2,19,655 crore
The logistics sector is increasingly adopting a mix of ‘plug and play’ and integrated IT solutions to streamline operations, build efficiencies and enable accelerated growth. The IT solutions market in this sector, though nascent, is rapidly evolving to meet the growing needs of a cross section of firms in this domain. A gamut of applications driven by the need for streamlining operations and business processes is driving the adoption of IT among logistics service providers. In addition, increased customer expectations of ‘just in time’ deliveries and tracking systems have fueled the need for e-commerce/ Web based solutions. IT is expected to be the harbinger of growth in the next phase of evolution of the Indian logistics sector.
The major hurdle is more in “awareness” and “adoption”. It requires a change in mindset, where logistics players stop looking at IT as a cost centre and see it as a “differentiator” that will help in improving efficiency and gain more leverage with the customers.
The IT systems market in itself is going through a major transformation. A global benchmark is to spend about 2.5 per cent of the revenue on IT in the logistics sector. Some companies that are small but dynamic and fast growing actually spend double of that for a few years and build a certain size quickly. IT infrastructure (hardware, software and people) are the major areas of cost. With the transition in the IT space, many companies have started to offer “on-demand” software as a service thereby the cost factor on infrastructure is reducing.
Eventually, logistics is nothing but the movement of material and information. There could be no logistics without a proper flow of information.
